The ground was wet and the track green and muddy. Village won the toss and gave the Strongroom top order a difficult time with swingers and cutters and a very slow outfield. Jimmy looked good for his 18, but the only really decent partnership came in the middle order as Dave “not out” Proctor and Will “smash it” Davies provided some respite. Ujjal played a nice scampering cameo at the end. At least we had seen our overs out (reduced to 35 because of the threatening weather), but 114 seemed maybe 15 or so short of a truly tricky target. Village’s top four bowlers had done a good job.
By the time the Muswell Hill Bakery soggy crisps had been finished (or binned), the sun was well and truly out. Ujjal and Paddy bowled a good tight opening spell, but Paddy’s basic lack of decent body care meant he barely completed an exhausting 4-over spell. Jo replaced Paddy and bowled an extremely tight spell, with the Village batsmen really struggling to get anything away but they crucially survived. Although Strongroom were keeping the runs down, we were unable to apply any meaningful pressure on the wickets column. This ultimately meant that the small total was always going to be vulnerable to just one or two good overs. These duly came against Olly and Sumer and despite Martin’s best efforts Village crossed the line. Given that they only lost two wickets, the finish was surprisingly close. While scoring was never easy, batting was less precarious in the second innings, probably thanks to the older ball and sunshine. Village are a good match for us and enjoyable opposition and we look forward to the next encounter...
